First Day of School

Today’s our official first day of school. Last week our practice run of our school schedule went pretty well. The earlier the kids get up, the earlier they want to go to bed at night, giving Daddy and Mommy a bit of time to enjoy a movie or just conversation. It’s my goal to maintain a strict bedtime for this purpose if no other.

Our schedule starts at 6:30 a.m. for the eldest two girls and 7:00 a.m. for the others.  We take the youngest two for a walk in the mornings for about 45 minutes while my nine year old dd prepares breakfast. Saturday she whipped up pancakes, bacon, grits, and scrambled eggs all by herself! It was quite good (I have to say). I made sure that I scheduled things that are important to our family time like sewing and playtime with the little ones. I also scheduled a 30 minute morning chore time and a 30 minute afternoon chore time. This allows us to keep our home up in the midst of our busy day.

On the other hand, although we’ve done a trial run of the schedule, I’ve noticed that the real first day of school brings lots of excitement to even homeschooled kids. The kids are very excited to get started on a new routine, begin new books, and to make a better effort than the previous year. What a joy it is to my heart to see them rushing about to make things happen on time. I’m interested to see what this first day of school will bring.
